What is the Eye of Terror?

The Eye of Terror, also known as the Ocularis Terribus or the Anathema Nonplus Ultra, is a colossal Warp rift where the Immaterium and realspace intersect, creating a nexus of psychic energy and physical space-time.

This hellish anomaly spans approximately twenty thousand light-years across and is situated at the rimward edge of the Milky Way Galaxy in the Segmentum Obscurus, to the galactic northwest of Terra.

It is the largest and most notorious Warp rift in the galaxy, harboring the greatest concentration of Chaos forces in realspace.

The Birth of the Eye of Terror

Contrary to popular belief, the Eye of Terror is not a naturally occurring phenomenon. Its origins can be traced back to the catastrophic event known as the Fall of the Aeldari, which took place over 11,000 Terran years ago.

The psychic shockwave that accompanied the birth of the Chaos God Slaanesh was so immense that it could not be entirely contained within the Warp.

Instead, it spilled out into realspace through the minds of the Aeldari who perished on their lost empire’s homeworlds, now known as the Crone Worlds, which lie within the Eye of Terror.

The Nature of the Eye of Terror

Within the Eye of Terror, the laws of physics and reality as we know them are distorted and twisted. Time becomes a meaningless concept, and matter, thought, and energy blur together in a chaotic maelstrom.

The worlds engulfed by the Eye, known as Daemon Worlds, each constitute their own bizarre sub-reality, with physical laws shaped by the dominant Chaos God venerated by its inhabitants.

At the very center of the Eye lies the “byssos,” a gaping hole in the fabric of reality through which raw Chaos energy pours into the material universe.

The Eye of Terror as a Refuge for Chaos

For the Traitor Legions of the Chaos Space Marines, the Eye of Terror has served as their sanctuary and base of operations for over ten millennia.

Following their defeat in the Horus Heresy, the corrupted Astartes sought refuge within the Eye, launching sporadic raids and invasions into Imperial space from this hellish realm.

The Eye also beckons to the worst of the galaxy’s traitors, heretics, and renegades, offering them a haven from Imperial justice and a place to fully embrace the corrupting influence of the Ruinous Powers.

However, during the cataclysmic events of Abaddon the Despoiler’s 13th Black Crusade in 999.M41, Cadia finally fell to the servants of the Dark Gods, despite the valiant efforts of the Imperial defenders. – The Planet broke before the Guard did

The Cadian Gate: Great Rift and the Dark Imperium

With the fall of Cadia and the destruction of the ancient Necron-built pylons that helped stabilize the Cadian Gate, the Eye of Terror began to expand across the galaxy, eventually linking with the Hadex Anomaly in the Eastern Fringe.

This cataclysmic event resulted in the formation of the Great Rift, or Cicatrix Maledictum, which divided the Imperium in two.

The worlds cut off from the light of the Astronomican, trapped on the far side of the rift, became known as the Imperium Nihilus, or the Dark Imperium – a realm beset by the horrors of the Warp and the unrelenting assaults of Chaos.
